Holiday in Bibione

The surrounding area of Bibione

The surrounding area of Bibione is a valid alternative to the beach during your holiday in Bibione. Just a few miles away from Bibione is the city of Portogruaro, the so-called city of gates, which is certainly an interesting destination. The city is divided by the river Lemene, a clear watered mirror, in which the old palaces in Venetian Gothic style are perfectly reflected. The imposing Town Hall dominating the Piazza della Repubblica is also build in Gothic style.

Inside the palace you can admire some well-preserved 15th century fresco, as well as the paintings of the Futurist Luigi Russolo, who was born in this city. The same square is also known for its well "Pozzo con le Gru", constructed in 1494 by Antonio Pilacorte. Once in Portogruaro it is easy to get to San Michele on the river Tagliamento. This is a quiet spot on the border to the Friul, once an important stop on the principal Roman road Via Annia connecting Aquileia with Rome.

Surroundings of Bibione

San Michele

During the nine years of Napoleon's dominion, from 1805 to 1814, the Tagliamento signified the border between two distinct municipalities: Latisana on the left and San Michele on the right, which was soon annexed to the province of Venice. Worth visiting is certainly the Villa Ivanich, bombed during WWII, and now completely overgrown by climbing plants. This used to be the family seat of the Mocenigo family, one of the most important Venetian nobility, and was build for them in the 1500s by Longhena. Only a little bit further on from Portogruaro is Concordia Saggitaria, an ancient Roman colony.

Concordia derives its name "Saggittaria" from the arrow "sagittae" making works, which used to have its seat here in the 3rd century D.C. The Cathedral Square is also of major archaeological importance. Only recently the remains of an ancient Roman road were found on this site. When in Concordia visit the cathedral, but also worth seeing are the tower of Campanaria, the Baptist Hall, the Town Hall and the Bishops Palace (Palazzo Vescovile). These are just a few ideas for your excursion itinerary outside of Bibione and are supposed to just give you a taste of all the other places you can discover.
